Churches

were among the first buildings to be built in the county.  Some buildings served as schools and churches. The Bryson City Methodist Church was built on Main Street in 1888, was dedicated the same year.

The first Baptist Church of Bryson City was organized in December 1877.  Meetings were held in the courthouse, then the schoolhouse, alternating with the Methodists.  The Rev. George Church was called as a regular pastor.  In 1892, under his leadership a new Baptist church was erected.

A Presbyterian church was built in 1890, and dedicated June 7, 1891.  The church is located at the end of Everett Street and still stands.

The mountain minister that used notes was scorned by his congregation.  Today in the more remote churches the man and women sit on opposite sides of the church, but this practice was carried on for many years.
